Not exactly the look I was going for. The twists were loose, looked bad, and I was sick of doing it. I came to the computer to re watch the video and see if I was doing it wrong. When I came back to the family room, Boss was happily spraying and combing Naomi's hair. I thought it was hilarious, it looked like he did it anyway.
John was disappointed I didn't finish, like I knew he would be. I tried to tell him I was incapable, but he convinced me to try again. I did and this is what it came out as this time. It still needs TONS of improvement, I'm a little embarrassed by these pictures actually, but it's a start! Here are no less than 6 photos of her finished do'. I couldn't eliminate any of them, because look at that face, I'm so obsessed with her.
The back looks bad because I did 2 pony puffs, but she has a twist down the center of her head, so it had to go in one side. It doesn't look this lopsided in real life. Or maybe it does, but whatever.
Really, don't you just want to eat her?!
I have my first "hair night" with our transracial adoption group this saturday. I'm really looking forward to learning more from other adoptive moms. In case you don't know, black women's hair is a big deal. A big enough deal that Chris Rock even made a documentary about it. It's really important to me that Naomi loves her hair. A lot of moms take their kids to salons to get their hair done by black women, and while I won't say that I'll never do that, I feel like as her mom I should be the one who figures it out. If it takes years of practice until my fingers bleed, I will learn to do Naomi's hair the way it should be done. I want her to feel beautiful and I hope she never feels like she is at a disadvantage because she has a white mother who doesn't know what she is doing. : )

ADORABLE! She looks so grown up in these pictures, like a little preschooler or something. So cute Michele and good luck, you're doing awesome!
I agree - GOOD JOB MICHELLE! She does look yummy and so grown up! She is beautiful and really, you did a terrific job!!! :)
She's so beautiful and you are a great mom! I want to be like you when I grow up Michele!
still cant over how BEAUTIFUL she is. seriously. and you did great with her hair, i can only imagine..... carlee always looks homeless because the only hair do i cant do, has to be accomplished in 3.7 seconds while she is screaming and pinned in between my legs. cant wait to see what you come up with after your "hair night"
Remember those crazy braids we would try to do at Girlscamp?? Naomi looks great and with practice you will be a pro! Naomi looks so grown up with her hair pulled back- it makes her face look thinner and less baby-ish or something. Good job.
she is a doll!!!! and you are adorable for wanting to learn how to do it all, she will love you for that. lucky girl to have you as a mom.
um, my kid is white and I can't do her hair.
Good job Shel.
And I'm in love with those last 2 shots of Naomi - her face! It makes me miss her so bad.
And Boss doing her hair might just be the funniest thing I've seen all day - oh wait, except when Alex was yelling at me today while scratching her crotch and picking her nose all at the same time.
That really happened.
I burst into tears at these pictures. She is so grown up and gorgey!!! I think you did an awesome job and even though I don't have anything close to the texture of black hair, I know how frustrating it is to deal with curly hair.
I have to come hug and kiss your darling offspring! I will walk there if need be!
SO proud. she looks adorable.
I am so impressed- her hair looks great. you should be proud of yourself and your hard work! I am in love/jealous of her hair (as I've told you before) but I did get the Carol's daughter stuff and it has made a huge difference. Maybe someday CC will have enough that I can try these twists. I think my sis has done them before too. They look adorable.
I wonder if Boston will grow up to be a great hair stylist like Shep. What would John think? I think the pictures of him giving the hair do a try are priceless. My only complaint is Naomi is looking much too grown up lately - tell her to stop it! :)
ADORABLE!! She looks so precious with that hair style! It also makes her look so much older!!
I follow a couple of blogs that adopted from Afrika and I think Kristy (Lucys mom) made a post about hair too. She said that black woman think it's great white people adopt but if they ever see them messing up the hair they will feel offended or something. It must be a really big deal and I am sure a lot of work to take care of their hair! You are doing a great job!! She sure is gorgeous!!!
and i forgot to remind you that quincy has literally 1/3 the hair naomi does! can't wait for hair night!
Seriously, THE cutest pictures EVER of Naomi! I think you did an AWESOME job on her hair!! SHe looks insanely grown-up! And I LOVE the pics of Boston styling her hair, lol! That kid cracks me up!
Oh my gosh! She is so flipping cute!!! And I think you did very well on her new hair-do!
She is so stinking cute and her hair looks great. Nice work Michele!
Great job on her hair! She is so cute!
