Naomi's new do'

It was time for me to branch out and try some new styles in Naomi's hair. Actually, it's been time for a while. I have been putting it off because I hate doing things I'm bad at... ya know? After lots of internet research, and countless video tutorials thanks to Shuruba.com and YouTube, I decided to try flat twists. They look at lot like cornrows, but instead of braids they are just 2 strand twists. I sent the video I found with a good tutorial to a friend who's daughter is Boston's age, she whipped up this hair do in like 20 minutes flat on her first try, so I decided it couldn't be that bad. I got out my hair arsenal and all the snacks and movies I could find and we set out to do it yesterday. 1 hour and a few too many 4 letter words later, this is what Naomi had...

Not exactly the look I was going for. The twists were loose, looked bad, and I was sick of doing it. I came to the computer to re watch the video and see if I was doing it wrong. When I came back to the family room, Boss was happily spraying and combing Naomi's hair. I thought it was hilarious, it looked like he did it anyway.

John was disappointed I didn't finish, like I knew he would be. I tried to tell him I was incapable, but he convinced me to try again. I did and this is what it came out as this time. It still needs TONS of improvement, I'm a little embarrassed by these pictures actually, but it's a start! Here are no less than 6 photos of her finished do'. I couldn't eliminate any of them, because look at that face, I'm so obsessed with her.

The back looks bad because I did 2 pony puffs, but she has a twist down the center of her head, so it had to go in one side. It doesn't look this lopsided in real life. Or maybe it does, but whatever.

Really, don't you just want to eat her?!

I have my first "hair night" with our transracial adoption group this saturday. I'm really looking forward to learning more from other adoptive moms. In case you don't know, black women's hair is a big deal. A big enough deal that Chris Rock even made a documentary about it. It's really important to me that Naomi loves her hair. A lot of moms take their kids to salons to get their hair done by black women, and while I won't say that I'll never do that, I feel like as her mom I should be the one who figures it out. If it takes years of practice until my fingers bleed, I will learn to do Naomi's hair the way it should be done. I want her to feel beautiful and I hope she never feels like she is at a disadvantage because she has a white mother who doesn't know what she is doing. : )
