Thoughts on Christmas

For months I have been thinking about how to properly teach my kids the true meaning of Christmas. I love that this family came up with a tradition to keep Christmas simple and do something Christlike. I think we will adopt/adapt a similar tradition for our family.

What do you do in your family to teach your younger kids what Christmas is really about? What do you do to remind your older kids? How do you fight the urge to spoil your kids rotten because it's fun for you? Ahem. Just kidding - I totally don't struggle with that.

I bought a book called My First Story of the First Christmas. We have read it every night in December. Boston is starting to understand, other than the fact that now most babies in books are "Baby Jesus". But the end of the book reminds us that Christmas is the most important birthday we celebrate all year. Which takes me back to that blog post linked above. How come it's so easy to forget who the gifts are for, why we give them, and who they should be blessing?

So tell me, how do you do it in your family? I'd love to know so I can copy you and call the ideas my own.

Remember how we used to make you kids gather in our bedroom Christmas morning before running out to see what Santa brought and have our little talk about the true meaning of Christmas? Most memorable year was when we put Tanner on the spot and he wasn't coming up with an answer and your girls were getting impatient. Tanner blurted out - "I don't know the real meaning of Christmas - I'm only four!" Guess he thought we wanted a more complicated answer than we were really looking for :) Hope you create wonderful family traditions that you love.
